The microbubble workflow is straightforward and simple: mix to bind, spin to separate, aspirate to remove. Akadeum’s revolutionary microbubble approach is fast and easy to complete and requires no additional equipment to perform. That’s right – no magnets, no columns, no problems.

  • The functionalized microbubbles gently are mixed into the sample
  • The microbubbles seek out and bind to their targets
  • Using their inherent buoyancy, the microbubbles and their bound targets float to the surface

Microbubble enrichment is performed directly in the sample container, eliminating the need for harsh chemicals, magnetic gradient forces, and the use of rare earth magnets. Microbubbles harness the power of gravity (they float!) for separation, maintaining cell health and physiology during enrichment and resulting in an incredibly pure and viable population of rare and delicate analytes for downstream use.

Our buoyant approach to separation eliminates many of the existing hurdles that are limiting improvements or effectiveness of processes today. Microbubbles can be used in any number of cell-based immunology workflows, offer effective flow cytometry sample preparation that can reduce sort times up to 15-fold, and can even be customized for specific workflows in direct partnership with institutions around the world.

Akadeum’s microbubbles are small, solid particles that float. The core of each microbubble is a hollow microsphere that leverages the power of gravity for quick and gentle removal of captured targets from a complex fluidic mixture.

Akadeum’s microbubbles are strong and stable, and are able to float in water, phosphate-buffered saline (PBS), culture media, biological fluids, and other aqueous laboratory solutions. Their density endows them with the power to gently lift multiple cells per microbubble so as to minimize shear forces on delicate analytes.

Microbubbles can be functionalized to target and bind to any number of analytes of interest, including nucleic acids, proteins, cells, and more. In addition to a portfolio of commercialized kits, Akadeum’s Streptavidin-coated microbubbles are especially notable for their flexibility in enabling customized workflows, as they are compatible with nearly any biotinylated affinity molecule. This allows researchers to leverage the power of the microbubble technology to overcome obstacles in their research for which there is no known easy answer to complex separation needs.
